|
A young girl named Blooma is on an adventure to find the seven Dragon Balls. When all seven are gathered, the dragon god, Shenlong, will be summoned to grant any wish. She wants to wish for a great boyfriend. The holder of one of the Dragon Balls, the Si Xing Qiu, is a boy named SON Gokuu, who is a very naive mountain hick, though he makes up for it with his exceptional strength and fighting prowess. Blooma tricks Gokuu into being her bodyguard, and joining her on the journey with his Dragon Ball.

Ah, the first episode. Not overly great, but this was done a lot better than it could have been. They actually kept the pissing at the end! And Pilaf's dub voice is on par with CHIBA Shigeru.

| Names/Terms |
Gokuu retains his given name, though the "Goku" romanization doesn't retain the long vowel (but that's rather nitpicky and debatable anyway). His family name, Son, is completely removed from the series, however.
The girl whom I like to call Blooma is called "Bulma", based on Toriyama-sensei's own romaji spelling.
Pilaf and Mai retain their names. Shuu, however, is called Shao, but only during the first thirteen episodes. Mai and Shuu's names are probably meant to be a pun on ¾ÆÇä (Shuumai), and Shao is the Mandarin pronunciation of ¾Æ. It's a bit odd to translate Japanese into Chinese for an English dub. For what it's worth, Çä is Mai in both Japanese and Mandarin, so there's no way to tell if they did the same for her.
The dragon, Shenlong, is called the "Eternal Dragon". I imagine they translated ¿Àζ to "God Dragon", and toned down the "God" portion to "Eternal".
Gokuu's magic bou, the Nyoibou, is called the "Power Pole"...
Hoi Poi Capsules are called "Dinocaps", at least for the first thirteen episodes. I believe they're called "capsules" after that. The Japanese version does later shorten it to just "capsule" as well.
The Dragon Radar retains its name.

| Dialogue |
|
The opening narration is completely changed. Originally, Narrator just talks about how this story takes place long ago in the mountains, and there's a boy living all alone. In the dub, however, Narrator reveals that the boy's name is Gokuu, and he was raised by "an old master named Gohan". We aren't supposed to find out that his name is Gokuu until he introduces himself to Blooma, and we shouldn't find out his grandpa's name until Yamcha asks about the Nyoibou in Episode 005!

(36 seconds) This takes place after Gokuu first throws the car and it lands on its side. Gokuu pulls out the Nyoibou, and then he sees the goblin (Blooma) pop up outta the monster/car, who attacks him with "evil magic" (a gun). The gunshots don't hurt Gokuu, though, and she freaks out. The dub picks up with Gokuu preparing to whack the goblin.

(2 seconds) After Gokuu prepares to whack the goblin, a clip of Blooma with the gun in her hand, then dropping it to surrender, is cut.
